Cuban-American finance professional to take on MAGA Republican Mario Diaz-Balart
Miami, FL – January 6, 2026 – Yurina Gil is running for Congress because she escaped a dictatorship in Cuba and she doesn’t want to see her adopted homeland fall prey to another. Her priorities are for Democrats to regain control of the House of Representatives, then begin to work to bringing stability back to Washington, DC. and affordability to her constituents by focusing on real policies that that improve the quality of life for all Americans.
“My experience, professional expertise, and unwavering belief in the American Dream drive my commitment to serve Florida’s District 26 with bold, compassionate leadership,” says Gil. “I want to see future generations of Americans have a livable planet and for more people to have better opportunities than those I enjoyed.” A political novice, Yurina aims to bring a fresh perspective to DC and give voters a chance to have real representation, not a do-nothing subservient rubberstamp for Donald Trump.
Born in Pogoloti, Marianao, Cuba in 1979, Gil was a very active child who frequently got in trouble at school for talking to classmates. A hyperkinetic and extremely bright girl, she refused to be part of the Union de Jovenes Comunistas (UJC). Yurina emigrated to the United States in 1998 after her biological father won the visa lottery, and though she didn’t speak any English, she registered for the Job Corps in Gainesville, FL. There she began to learn the language and do administrative work.
She eventually settled in Miami and enrolled at Miami Dade College, continuing to study English, while also working multiple jobs at factories, gas stations, doing medicine deliveries, and in bookkeeping. She liked numbers so much that she decided to pursue a career in accounting. Gil finished her associates degree at MDC and moved on to Florida International University to complete her bachelor’s degree in accounting, where she also obtained a master’s in accounting.
Gil is now a certified professional accountant, and her career has included work auditing mutual funds and exchange traded funds, consulting and database management, corporate accounting, and managing client relations. Her academic career inspired her goal to provide increased access to education from colleges and universities and careers in trades. In addition, Yurina wants to help diversify our supply chain, relying more on our neighbors in Latin America, lessening our dependence on China.
Some of her other legislative priorities include fair and equal pay, Congressional integrity and independence, wage-to-rent indexing Act, carbon accountability, and climate resilience. “Florida District 26 deserves someone who will uphold human rights and fight for all of us, and I truly believe I am that candidate.”
