Community Arts & Culture and the Rhythm Foundation Present Afro Roots Virtual Fest September 12

The first-ever virtual edition of the annual world music festival features an evening of performances by Alsarah, Spam Allstars, Johnny Dread, Cortadito, Venezonix, and more

Miami Beach, FL — August 20, 2020 — The Miami New Times’ 2019 “Best Music Festival” has now gone totally virtual. After enduring several cancellations and postponements due to COVID-19, the 22nd Afro Roots Fest concert season will culminate and conclude with a multinational livestream concert featuring Sudanese chanteuse Alsarah and several of Miami’s new and legacy artists on Saturday, September 12, 2020, beginning at 8 p.m. EST. Webcast live from the  North Beach Bandshell (7275 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33141) and emceed by Afropop Worldwide‘s legendary host Georges Collinet, other acts will include Spam Allstars, Johnny Dread, Cortadito, and Venezonix. 

Alsarah is a singer, songwriter, and bandleader born in Khartoum, Sudan. She relocated to Yemen with her family, then to Brooklyn, NY, where she has lived since 2004. The East African retro-pop group Alsarah & the Nubatones were born out of many dinner conversations between Alsarah and percussionist Rami El Aasser about nubian “songs of return”, modern migration patterns, and the cultural exchanges between Sudan and Egypt. 

Local favorite musicologist and spinmaster Andrew Yeomanson AKA DJ Le Spam  founded Spam Allstars 23 years ago. The early days included hilarious spoken word records, mixed with a variety of instruments, and the lovely scent of Spam frying live on stage as a special snack to share with his non-vegan guests. More than two decades later, the band has a core group of musicians who have been performing an average of 150 shows per year, across the U.S. and with some very special trips to Europe, Canada, South America and South Africa.  

They held a weekly residency at the legendary Little Havana club called Hoy Como Ayer, where the band forged what many have called a new Miami sound. Their “electronic descarga” is a reflection of the musicians and their cultures, training, and musical influences.

Johnny Dread quite simply transcends Reggae music and travels into a unique blend of world beat rhythms. His musical influences are as diverse as his rasta / Cuban-American background. With his undeniable rebel soul, he infuses Caribbean-influenced beats, Afro-Cuban, and rock sounds into every one of his songs. This combination provides the audience with contagious rhythms and powerful, soul-wrenching melodies. 

He has taken the stage in international festivals, concerts and benefits with leading artists such as Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and Israel Vibration, among others. A self-taught drummer, he has captivated audiences from around the world and has accumulated a loyal fan base all over the United States, Europe and South America.

Cortadito is a group that has simply revitalized Son Montuno, the late nineteenth-century country music from the mountainous regions of Eastern Cuba. Their sound can best be described as reminiscent of the Buena Vista Social Club. Jose Elias founded the group alongside Julio Cesar Rodriguez Delet in November of 2011 after a 12-year stint with Conjunto Progreso that garnered him a Grammy nomination for his participation in the album Masters of Cuban Son. The duo was an instant success and were invited to perform at the Fingerlakes Grassroots festival in Trumansberg, NY.  

They released their first CD titled Abriendo Caminos in 2012, which featured one original composition by each of the artists, including “Delicias Caribeña” (Elias) and “Te Lo Perdiste” (Rodriguez). They released Canciones de Julio in 2018 and were named “Best Latin Act” by the Miami New Times in 2019. The band occasionally backs legendary Cuban musician and Buena Vista Social Club member Eliades Ochoa.

Venezonix presents a fusion of Afro-Venezuelan rhythms with electronic music and technology led by Andres Ponce (agpa), co-founder of acclaimed Nacional recording artists ElasticBond. Their upcoming EP La Que Es features collaborations with Betsayda Machado and Parranda el Clavo, as well as a selection of genre-bending explorations mixing traditional Venezuelan instruments with futuristic beats and synthesizer textures.

The livestream will also include a Community Spotlight segment celebrating some of Miami’s cultural ambassadors. Scheduled to appear are: African instrument-maker and author Eddie Osborne (Ancestral Memories), the Circle of Brotherhood, Concerned African Women, and more to be announced. 

Collinet, a native of Cameroon in West Africa, is one of the best-known and best-loved broadcasters on the African continent. Based in the U.S. for more than 25 years, Collinet’s French and English language music programs broadcast to Africa via the Voice of America have entertained millions of devoted fans. Afropop Worldwide is a Peabody award-winning radio program and online magazine dedicated to music from Africa and the African diaspora.

Jim Camacho’s New Single “Going on Faith” Urges Optimism

Celebrated songwriter’s new release inspires hope during today’s troubled times

Miami, Florida – June 12, 2020 – If ever there was a time when faith was sorely needed, it must be right now. Caught in the merciless grasp of the global chaos and hopelessness which finds the world turned upside down, and thrust into the unyielding grip of a new reality, faith is one of the few commodities worth clinging to. Acclaimed singer / songwriter Jim Camacho hopes to spread the sentiment with his new single “Going on Faith”, which is streaming now on all platforms.

“It wasn’t written with all this in mind, and in fact, wasn’t originally intended to be released at all,” says Camacho. “Respected Nashville songwriter Kris Bergness and I found ourselves in a writing room together. We were both there writing for our publishers…just to write…to roll the dice,” Camacho recalls. “We thought maybe we could collaborate on some songs that could possibly be used for film or television, or by artists who might potentially be looking for material. However, after we finished it, I felt really attached to it and wanted to release it myself.”

Produced by John Carter Cash at the legendary Cash Cabin studios, the song speaks to a need so many people are experiencing at this point in time. Indeed, the lyric effectively sums up the sentiments accompanying this unexpected transition brought on by the crisis, as well as a desire to keep optimism intact, even though the odds may say otherwise.

The melody suits the sentiment. An anthemic ballad, it finds Camacho’s emphatic, emotional vocal adding an extra depth to the urgency and intensity that the lyrics so effectively share. A track that conveys both the desperation and desire that the world’s facing in these troubling times, it also reflects both the passion and purpose that’s always informed Camacho’s music. This is the first of an ongoing series of singles Camacho has planned for the months ahead, leading up to a full-length album to be released in 2021.

Naturally, Camacho is no stranger when it comes to making music that resonates through melody and meaning. A veritable renaissance man in the surest sense, he is not only a respected songwriter, musician and producer, but also a playwright, actor and musical theater composer. As co-founder (with his brother John) of the legendary Miami band The Goods, he attracted national attention through a series of albums that allowed the band to work with legendary producer Tom Dowd, sharing stages with the likes of Pearl Jam, The Smithereens, Cracker and Matthew Sweet, and reaping any number of accolades in the process.

Country Music en Español Artist Stokoff Releases Tribute to Jose Feliciano

Remake of Puerto Rican superstar’s hit didn’t start out as a country song, but became one in the studio

Boca Raton, FL — April 3, 2020 — South Florida-based Stokoff has issued another new single,  the second cover in just more than a month. This time he pays homage to Puerto Rican singer, songwriter and guitarist Jose Feliciano with a remake of the 1970 cut “Que Sera” – the song and accompanying video are now streaming on the artist’s YouTube channel. One of the first songs Stokoff learned to play as a child, the song was intended to be a warm up for his Nashville studio band during a 2019 recording session.

“I actually never thought to record it but the studio musicians really put their marks on it and turned it into a country song,” says Stokoff, the German-born, Colombia-raised singer, songwriter and producer. “It’s a sad song but the message is ultimately positive, that one will come back.” A fitting theme for this uncertain and uncharted time of the coronavirus. This version features pedal steel guitar and a very countrified guitar solo.

Making the most of his COVID-19 downtime not only by releasing new music, Stokoff is also performing live streaming concerts on his Facebook page each Sunday night at 7 p.m., and beginning tonight, on his YouTube channel at 7 p.m. ET. Viewers can tune in at youtube.com/OctavioStokoff. 

Born blind because of a congenital eye disease in Lares, Puerto Rico on September 10, 1945, Feliciano rose to fame on the strength of his chart-topping cover of The Doors’ “Light My Fire” in 1968. (This is the first song Stokoff heard by Feliciano.) He had subsequent hits, including the holiday standard “Feliz Navidad” and contributed to recordings by John Lennon, Joni Mitchell and Bill Withers.

Stokoff leads a musical movement called Country Music en Español, which seeks to bring Country music to Spanish speakers throughout the globe. His last release came at the end of February, a remake of a 1993 Fito Paez song “A Rodar Mi Vida”. He is gearing up to release additional singles in the coming months, including a full-length of country music covers recorded in Spanish.

Country Music en Español Artist Stokoff Releases Tribute to Fito Paez

New version of “A Rodar Mi Vida” a respectful nod to one of South America’s most influential and successful songwriters

Boca Raton, FL — February 28, 2020 — South Florida-based Stokoff has released a new single, a cover of the 1993 Fito Paez song “A Rodar Mi Vida”. Originally appearing on Paez’s landmark album El Amor Despues del Amor, Stokoff re-recorded the number in Nashville recently, the video is now playing on the artist’s YouTube channel, and it will soon be available on sites such as Spotify, iTunes, and Deezer.

“Early in my career I used to play this song at every honky tonk in Bogota, Colombia,” says Stokoff, the German-born, Colombia-raised singer, songwriter and producer. “At the time, Fito was a vanguard artist in South America, and the song was like an anthem to me. It still is a great song to play live. The funny thing is, it’s supposed to be a Rock en Español song, but it is very country, as you can hear in this new version.”

He is the spearhead of a musical movement called Country Music en Español, which seeks to bring Country music to Spanish speakers throughout the globe. Helping that cause was his last release “Embrujo”, which has to date received more than 1 million plays on YouTube. The video was shot at the iconic venue The Nashville Palace, and represents the last song the late guitarist and producer Dan Warner worked on for Stokoff. Prior to this, his single “Todo Ha Cambiado” was the first Spanish song to be featured on the Apple Music “Country Wide” playlist. 

Paez was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1963, forming his first band at age 13. He began his music career by releasing Del ‘63 in 1984 and toured extensively throughout his native country and throughout South America. By the time he wrote and released the record that contained “A Rodar Mi Vida”, he had become a household name in the southern hemisphere, and the subsequent sales of 600,000 copies made him the best-selling Argentine artist of his genre.

The Road to Afro Roots Travels through South Miami February 29

Zona De Bomba sources explosive material from the Puerto Rican tradition of Bomba, which runs on the power of only two hard-hitting instruments; percussion and voice. This diverse collective that includes representation from Puerto Rico and Cuba, is led by Charley Rivas,whose goal is to transform the performance of Bomba into one that’s representative of the group’s collective musical experience.

Stokoff Debuts at Carnaval on the Mile on First-Ever Country Stage March 7

New describes the sound best as, “an ethereal journey to the ends of the earth,” after which the album was named. The Ellameno Beat is a band of twenty-somethings hailing from Jensen Beach, Florida. Founded and produced by lead singer Reggie Froom, the group channels an original progressive reggae / roots sound and presence that is the product of a life-long passion for soulful expression through music and the ocean. The band also includes James Rosenblit on drums, Dylon Hixon (bass), and Walker Brantingham on (keys). Their latest release is 2017’s Surface.

Third Wheel Debut at Hole19 Scratch Kitchen + Bar February 8

Veteran Miami-based band to play rock and alternative covers at Miami Springs bar and restaurant


Miami Springs, FL – January 28, 2020 –  Hole19 Scratch Kitchen + Bar will host cover band Third Wheel for the first time on Saturday, February 8, 2020, beginning at 7:30 p.m. There is no cover and all ages are welcome to attend. Hole19 is located on the grounds of the Miami Springs Golf & Country Club, at 650 Curtiss Pkwy, Miami Springs, Florida 33166. The band’s repertoire consists of well-known and recognizable 70s, 80s, and 90s rock and alternative staples.
 
Founded in 2017, Third Wheel unites a trio of musicians with a long musical history together, featuring guitarist / vocalist Tony Medina, drummer / vocalist Monchy Coruguedo, and bassist / vocalist Michael Mut. Medina and Mut played in the Sony Discos-distributed Pawnshop Drunks in the 2000s, and Coruguedo and Mut have been the Birdman’s Clambake rhythm section since 2014. They are becoming an in-demand cover band playing bars, lounges, breweries and private parties throughout South Florida.
 
Hole19 is owned by HRS Management, whose goal is to manage / own multiple concepts in specific ways that cater to their markets. The team has a combined experience of more than 65 years in the industry, specializing in turning properties around and producing efficient and effective outcomes. The Road to the 22nd Annual Afro Roots Fest Begins at Guanabanas February 8

All ages are welcome to a free afternoon and evening of world music highlighted by performances by Zona de Bomba, Morikeba Kouyate and the Antilles Music Ensemble beginning at 4 p.m. 

Jupiter, FL – January 28, 2020 – The Miami music and arts non-profit organization Community Arts and Culture (CAC) will kick off its 22nd annual series of concerts on Saturday, February 8, 2020 with a free concert in Jupiter at Guanabanas Island Restaurant & Bar beginning at 4 p.m. Afro Roots Fest, the tri-county travelling festival named “Best Music Festival” in the 2019 Miami New Times “Best of Miami” edition, will for a third year in a row start up in Palm Beach County at the award-winning waterfront venue. 

Zona de Bomba sources explosive material from the Puerto Rican tradition of Bomba, which runs on the power of only two hard-hitting instruments; percussion and voice.This diverse collective that includes representation from Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, and Venezuela is led by Charley Rivas whose goal is to transform the performance of Bomba into one that’s representative of the group’s collective musical experience.

Kouyate is a seventh-generation Jali (Griot) and has performed professionally for more than thirty years. He plays around the country as a solo artist, enticing audiences young and old with exciting music and engaging stores. He performs in his traditional Mandingo language, providing translation in English. Additionally, Morikeba can translate into French.  

Representing the days of early 20th century Caribbean dance music, and exploring both the diversity and commonality of Caribbean dance music, the Antilles Music Ensemble brings to life a score of traditional songs that have long inspired people  the world over.A creation of guitarist Jose Elias, (Spam Allstars, Nag Champayons, Cortadito), the  Antilles Music Ensemble showcases a variety of music from countries such as Martinique, Jamaica, Cuba, Haiti, Trinidad, and more.
