The Baboons Invade Hollywood ArtsPark

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Baboons Invade Hollywood ArtsPark January 2nd

Miami’s percussive primates announce free, all-ages show beginning at 8 p.m.

Miami, FL – December 8, 2016The Baboons, Miami’s joyfully genre-smashing ‘Afro-Cuban funk ‘n’ roll’ pioneers, will kick off 2016 with a free all-ages concert at the Hollywood ArtsPark (1 N Young Circle, Hollywood, FL 33020) on Saturday, January 2, 8 – 9:30 p.m. as part of the ArtsPark Live concert series.

The Baboons’ first show of 2016 marks the wildly eclectic ensemble’s return to the beautiful Hollywood ArtsPark in Downtown Hollywood for the first time since 2014. The band will be featuring new songs from its forthcoming 3rd full-length release, Spanglish as well as newer songs never before heard north of the Miami-Dade/Broward border. The music starts promptly at 8 p.m.

The Baboons draw inspiration from the mix of worldly influences found on the streets and beaches of their hometown. Throughout the years, musicians with diverse backgrounds have added to the band’s palette, evolving into a rich global fusion that combines Latin American, Caribbean, African, Middle Eastern and American roots influences.

The seven-piece outfit features sultry singer Majica on lead vocals and founder Mano Pila on drums and vocals (the two also host the “Global Gumbo with Majica & Mano P.” radio show Sundays on WDNA, 4-6 p.m.), Miguel Rega on percussion, Ike Blues on guitar and vocals, Andre Cama on bass, and Dominick Cama and Paul Messina on saxophones and flutes.

““We are thrilled to return to one of South Florida’s coolest and most historic venues,” said Majica. “Young Circle has hosted concerts since the 1920s, and The Baboons have been playing in this iconic community meeting place for two decades, since long before it was reborn as the ArtsPark, and it is always a pleasure to return to the scene of so many memorable events throughout the years.”

The Baboons have been South Florida fixtures for more than 22 years. Born at an In-Progress Art Festival at the now-defunct Ft. Lauderdale nightspot Squeeze on July 2, 1993, the amorphous early ensembles featured a rotating line-up of local musicians eager to explore the band’s culturally curious aesthetic. Throughout the years, the band has shared the bill with Jimmy Buffet, George Clinton’s P-Funk All-Stars, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and The Radiators.

Since their inception, the group has received many honors, including a Florida Jammy Award for Best Worldbeat Band. The Baboons have released two full-length recordings – the award-winning Evolution, honored by New Times Miami as the “Best Album Of The Past Twelve Months” in 2000, and the critically acclaimed follow-up Global Gumbo in 2001. The band is currently working on the 15-track recording Spanglish at Miami’s Red Door Studio.

Guanabanas Launches Latin Music Night

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Guanabanas Launches Latin Music Night to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

Miami New Times’ Best Latin Band 2015 Electric Piquete scheduled to perform October 17

Jupiter, FL – September 29, 2015 Named after an exotic tropical fruit native to Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and northern South America, it was only a matter of time before the waterfront restaurant known for its delectable menu and spicy live music lineup would host a Latin night. Guanabanas, located at 960 North Highway A1A, Jupiter, FL 33477, will now be hosting a monthly evening of music from some of South Florida’s finest Latin bands, beginning October 17, 2015 with Miami’s Electric Piquete.

“This is something we have been meaning to do for quite some time,” says Talent Buyer Matt Cahur. “Reaction to Latin music is generally quite good up here, and if Electric Piquete’s performance during the late spring / early summer was any indication, this night and subsequent nights will do very well here.”  Cahur’s decision to initiate Latin night on the heels of Hispanic Heritage Month was driven in part by the diversity of South Florida and the prominence of Latin American culture in the area.

Formed in 2007, Electric Piquete is a Latin funk band known for its Afro-Cuban authenticity and inventive takes on Latin and jazz standards. They released a Latin jazz single, a Latin soul single, debuted at the Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival, played Carnaval on the Mile for the sixth straight year, served as the house band at the Miss Carnaval Miami beauty pageant for a fourth time, and had a song placed on a special about Miami on CNN – all in 2015.

Guanabanas is an open air restaurant and bar with woven tiki huts and banyan trees towering overhead and hand-chiseled coquina stone pathways underfoot. The team maintains a laid-back, island atmosphere where everyone is welcome. “The diversity of the patrons continues to amaze us,” says co-owner Jeannie Van Boven. “We see people coming from all different places for all sorts of reasons, whether it’s a group enjoying ladies night out, a young family for an early dinner, a couple on date night, boaters stopping in for a bite, or a group catching happy hour after work. Our patrons tend to feel more like family.”

The October 17 performance begins at 9 p.m. and is free and open to the public of all ages. For more details about the band, navigate to www.ElectricPiquete.com. For more information about the venue, please visit www.Guanabanas.com or call 561.747.8878.
