Third World has blazed a trail in reggae music, performing and recording together for more than 40 years. Big Harvest and Uma Galera play authentic roots rock reggae ripe with soulful guitar riffs and sometimes augmented by horns; they are bi-lingual English and Spanish.

The Baboons create a seamless fusion of all the worldly influences found on the streets of their hometown into a global gumbo with a unique Miami sound. Spanglish is their third full-length album. Laroc is known as a leading East Coast video DJ; Gravy creates unique environments and brings diverse groups of listeners together through his rice and peas collective.

Day two will feature yoga with Afrobeta, one of Miami’s premiere electro-pop bands and a frequent performer at Ultra Music Festival, “Mommy and Me” yoga with Nicola, a performance by the Guitars Over Guns organization’s students and alumni (GOGO), the Gypsy Latin sounds of Tamboka, and the Monkey Village All Stars celebrating their 15th Anniversary and DJ sets by Ephniko in between it all. GOGO volunteers work with at-risk youth at area schools, mentoring them with music.

Monkey Village is a collective of musicians that lived, jammed and performed together, giving rise to several local mainstay groups, including Suenalo. Ephniko also collaborates with several prominent Miami groups and makes music with his own project, the Patacon Conspiracy.

The Baboons Invade Hollywood ArtsPark

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Baboons Invade Hollywood ArtsPark January 2nd

Miami’s percussive primates announce free, all-ages show beginning at 8 p.m.

Miami, FL – December 8, 2016The Baboons, Miami’s joyfully genre-smashing ‘Afro-Cuban funk ‘n’ roll’ pioneers, will kick off 2016 with a free all-ages concert at the Hollywood ArtsPark (1 N Young Circle, Hollywood, FL 33020) on Saturday, January 2, 8 – 9:30 p.m. as part of the ArtsPark Live concert series.

The Baboons’ first show of 2016 marks the wildly eclectic ensemble’s return to the beautiful Hollywood ArtsPark in Downtown Hollywood for the first time since 2014. The band will be featuring new songs from its forthcoming 3rd full-length release, Spanglish as well as newer songs never before heard north of the Miami-Dade/Broward border. The music starts promptly at 8 p.m.

The Baboons draw inspiration from the mix of worldly influences found on the streets and beaches of their hometown. Throughout the years, musicians with diverse backgrounds have added to the band’s palette, evolving into a rich global fusion that combines Latin American, Caribbean, African, Middle Eastern and American roots influences.

The seven-piece outfit features sultry singer Majica on lead vocals and founder Mano Pila on drums and vocals (the two also host the “Global Gumbo with Majica & Mano P.” radio show Sundays on WDNA, 4-6 p.m.), Miguel Rega on percussion, Ike Blues on guitar and vocals, Andre Cama on bass, and Dominick Cama and Paul Messina on saxophones and flutes.

““We are thrilled to return to one of South Florida’s coolest and most historic venues,” said Majica. “Young Circle has hosted concerts since the 1920s, and The Baboons have been playing in this iconic community meeting place for two decades, since long before it was reborn as the ArtsPark, and it is always a pleasure to return to the scene of so many memorable events throughout the years.”

The Baboons have been South Florida fixtures for more than 22 years. Born at an In-Progress Art Festival at the now-defunct Ft. Lauderdale nightspot Squeeze on July 2, 1993, the amorphous early ensembles featured a rotating line-up of local musicians eager to explore the band’s culturally curious aesthetic. Throughout the years, the band has shared the bill with Jimmy Buffet, George Clinton’s P-Funk All-Stars, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band and The Radiators.

Since their inception, the group has received many honors, including a Florida Jammy Award for Best Worldbeat Band. The Baboons have released two full-length recordings – the award-winning Evolution, honored by New Times Miami as the “Best Album Of The Past Twelve Months” in 2000, and the critically acclaimed follow-up Global Gumbo in 2001. The band is currently working on the 15-track recording Spanglish at Miami’s Red Door Studio.

The Baboons will be showcasing songs from their upcoming recording, Spanglisha musical portrait of modern Miami currently in production at Miami’s Red Door Studio. The opus-in-progress includes 15 all-original songs that blend an array of international influences into a danceable fusion that can only come from Miami. What the press has to say about The Baboons:

“The Baboons like to call their music ‘urban tribal Afro-Cuban funk-n-roll,’ but it should really be classified as ‘everything but the kitchen sink.’ From airy rockers worthy of Carlos Santana to percussive jams, their tunes incorporate a number of incongruous sounds that, under their direction and care, are collected into a harmonious whole. The Baboons make unabashedly happy music that is easy to enjoy and difficult to criticize. The quintet, led by singer Majica, has been around for a minute (its last album, Global Gumbo, was released in 2000), so it knows how to move a crowd.” – New Times Miami

“A gem of a band.” – The Miami Herald

“The Baboons are definitively Miami: rife with multiculturality, shirtless and shoeless sand-kicking fun, consistent unpredictability, cramped clutches of hyperactivity…What the tropically topical outfit has been doing for years is generating soul-stirring, ass-shaking music that only a birdbrain would try to pigeonhole.” – The Miami Herald

“Ultra-rhythmic, multicultural, eclectic… One of the city’s most promising acts.” – New Times Miami

“Defies all categories…notorious…infectiously percussive” – City Link

“Diverse, stirring, and tropical as an August day on Virginia Key, Evolution is pure Miami and pure pleasure.” – New Times Miami, Best of Miami 1999, “Best Album of the Past Twelve Months”

“The ‘boons have released…two CDs, but despite the merits of the recordings, particularly the masterful new release Global Gumbo, it remains their live shows that cream collective musical jeans. All this gifting locals with mad party, half spectacle, half joyful orgy live performances has grown the ‘boons in size and exuberance…” – The Miami Herald

“Reviewers have struggled to classify the music of The Baboons ever since the band premiered a decade ago. ‘Spicy rhythmic gumbo!’ said one. ‘Afro-Cuban funk and roll!’ declared another. ‘Urban-tribal funk,’ one more dribbled. And so on. Would it help if we added, ‘The Baboons are what the Miami Sound Machine would sound like if the Miami Sound Machine didn’t suck?’ Whatever. Look, we all know that there are two forces at work today in American music — the Homogenizers, whose aim is to commodify and Britney-fy everything you listen to, and the Resistance, who, in the pursuit of something new and original, defy the convenience of labels. The Baboons are the percussive commando unit of the Resistance.” – New Times Broward Palm Beach

“They were originally into performance art and experimenting with percussive styles and spoken word poetry, but the Baboons have evolved into masters of reggae, blues, and Cuban funk; added a sexyvocalista; released two CDs; and forged a new genre-busting style of Floridian music.” – New Times Broward Palm Beach
