Hard Rock Café Hosts Bachaco during Monthly Reggae Residency

Miami reggae rock / Latin roots band performs live in downtown Miami each first Wednesday of the month

Miami, FL – May 23, 2017 – Miami-based reggae rock / Latin roots group Bachaco has found a new home in the 305. The Hard Rock Café Miami located at Bayside Marketplace (401 Biscayne Blvd, Suite R200, Miami, FL 33132) welcomes each new month with a party called “WednesReggae” featuring the group in an exclusive residency. The next party is scheduled for Wednesday, June 7, 2017, beginning at 8 p.m. No cover, all ages welcome.

“It’s a great opportunity and we couldn’t be happier to have been selected by the Hard Rock Café,” says lead singer and band leader Eddy Morillo. “The venue’s vibe is unmatched in Miami and the support we receive from staff and management is amazing.” Coming off of extensive touring in 2015 and 2016, the semi-permanent gig is a welcome refuge from the road. This is Bachaco‘s first residency at a renowned internationally acclaimed music venue.

Bachaco has recorded a follow-up their 2015 full-length release called Sunfire, which spawned three hit singles “Good Morning”, “Sunfire Girl” and “Keep Your Head Up”. “We’re ready to release as of right now, but we’re taking our time looking for the right record company,” says Morillo. The group’s sound is decidedly Miami, but draws from heavily from Jamaican, North American, Latin American and Caribbean influences such as dancehall, ska, rock, hip-hop, dub and Latin reggae.

Bachaco boasts a ten-year track record of writing and recording, in addition to more than 300 live shows throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America. Last month they headlined wildly successful Brew at the Zoo festival sponsored by the Miami New Times. They are a seasoned, but still extremely vibrant and relevant Latin / Caribbean fusion band.

Celebrate 20 Years of The Wallflower Gallery

The Wallflower Gallery Celebrates 20 Years at Churchill’s Pub May 13

Miami, FL – April 26, 2017 – Although the original location has been long closed and the building the housed it has been razed, The Wallflower Gallery remains a favorite art space, live music venue and community meeting locale to those who knew it well. On Saturday, May 13, the still-vibrant brand will celebrate 20 years of creative interaction with a multi-media showcase of art, music, spoken word, dance, comedy, community speakers and lots of fun. The festivities will take place at Churchill’s Pub (5501 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33127), beginning at 4 p.m. Admission is $10; 18 and over are welcome.

The performance arrangements will feature some of The Wallflower Gallery’s previous showcase formats such as the Songwriters’ Series, Dynamic Duos, Voice & Soul and Interactive Improv Jams.

“We are working to bring together as many of the musicians, artists, poets, dancers and performers from The Wallflower Gallery’s history as possible,” says owner and community activist Flash. “In addition, we will include community speakers from local organizations who were active in The Wallflower Gallery, plus, we are reaching out to former staff and patrons as part of a BIG FAMILY REUNION!”

This is not going to be a typical anniversary show, and part of the appeal will be to make it unique for the artists and audience involved. Each set will include special guests to expand the range of the music.  Spoken word artists will join the bands for short pieces to enhance the spontaneity and creativity of the experience. The different formats will layer the performers together and provide a platform for interaction.

“At the same time, we are initiating some reunion performances and bringing some disbanded groups back together,” Flash continues. “With the Interactive Improv Jams, we are combining various performers and sparking inspiration with an experimental flavor. For 13 years, The Wallflower Gallery provided a home in Downtown Miami for artists to develop their craft and enhance their skills. Since the building was torn down in 2010, The Wallflower Gallery has bolstered artists and events through social media and showcase support.”

This event signifies the impact of The Wallflower Gallery beyond the physical building and demonstrates how the essence of collaborative creativity enriches our community and the individuals involved.

Jim Camacho to Launch New Adventures in Songwriting Web Series March 24

Labor of musical love presents some of his favorite songwriters, ponder the mystery of where songs come from, and create a new song every show

Miami, FL – March 7, 2017 – Award-winning composer Jim Camacho’s latest musical creation is the brand-new web series called Adventures in Songwriting, which will begin streaming on YouTube and be available as an iTunes podcast beginning March 24. There will be a show the night before the launch to celebrate the new series at the Luna Star Café (775 NE 125th St, Miami, FL 33161). Jim will play along with his first guest on the series, the legendary Charlie Pickett. Staying with the songwriting theme, there will be an open mic kicking off the night from 7:15 to 8:15 p.m. All ages welcome, cover charge is $5.

“The idea of the show is to explore what songwriting is all about and what makes a person want to become a songwriter and express themselves in that way,” says Camacho. “You can say a lot in three minutes, and a great song can reach places that are ineffable. ‘What’s that part all about?’ Those are the kinds of discussions we want to have on this show / podcast. Oh, and write a song by the end of the show as well.”

The host and featured artists will share stories about their path in music, what led them to want to become a songwriter and, how they write. By the end of each episode, Jim and company will create and perform a new original song. Webcast from the artist’s YouTube page located at www.youtube.com/JimCamacho and podcast on iTunes (be sure to subscribe), the series will produce at least one episode per month.

The first episode features the rock legend Pickett, guitarist / vocalist and bandleader of the 80’s outfit Charlie Pickett and the Eggs. Future episodes will highlight punk / rocker Rob Elba (The Holy Terrors / Shark Valley Sisters), and indie songwriters Roger Houdaille and Michelle Grand, also known as Ex-Norwegian. Additional artists from Nashville, TN and the UK will be announced soon.

Shot at Camacho’s South Miami home studio, the series is lensed and edited by Juan Davila, a frequent collaborator who produced many of Jim’s latest videos. ABOUT JIM CAMACHO

Miami native Jim Camacho is prolific at writing songs, musicals and scoring children’s theater productions. His initial foray into theater began with Fools’ Paradise, which was directed and choreographed by the acclaimed Jonathan Cerullo. The show ran as a full production in Miami and played to sold out workshops in New York. He has collaborated with Sesame Street and Disney veteran Noel MacNeal on several “Boo at the Zoo” Bronx Zoo productions, as well as Mouse King, which has become a new South Florida holiday tradition, enjoying annual sell out performances each year since premiering in 2013.

Bronx, NY-native Pete Rock first rose to prominence as one half of a duo with C.L. Smooth in 1991.  After three releases with Smooth, Rock began a solo career and immersed himself in production, working initially with his cousin, the late Heavy D. His production credits span 31 artists also including PublicEnemy, Mary J. Blige, TLC, Monica, Mick Jagger, Madonna, and LadyGaga, and cross five genres (hip-hop, R&B, rock, pop and jazz).

Rock’s latest joints include tracks by J Dilla, De La Soul and Sadat X, as well as a record with Smoke DZA called Don’t Smoke Rocks and one with Smooth called T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You). Virginia Key Beach, FL – January 4, 2017 – The sixth installment of the Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival of Music & Dance is being billed this year as GrassRoots Live! and is scheduled to take place February 21-28, 2017. The event will not only take place on its traditional Key Biscayne home, but will also feature mainland satellite happenings in Wynwood and Midtown, and on North Beach. Grassroots festival mainstays Donna the Buffalo, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, The Blind Spots, and Big Mean Sound Machine join Miami’s Locos Por Juana, FABI and Electric Piquete as early headliners announced; more acts are soon to be revealed.

So far, there are official events planned for The Wynwood Yard (56 NW 29th St, Miami, FL 33127), Concrete Beach Social Hall (325 NW 24th St, Miami, FL 33127), Lagniappe House (3425 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33137), and the North Beach Bandshell (7275 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33141). The organization is looking to get back on track after underwhelming ticket sales for the recent Shakori Hills festival, which was interrupted for a day by a Hurricane Matthews strike on North Carolina in early October or 2016. In spite of the weather, the festival highlighted scores of bands, including a contingent from Miami that included Elastic Bond, Electric Piquete and Cortadito.

The Virginia Key / Greater Miami edition will once again showcase non-profit political, social and environmental activist organizations, and feature on-site camping on Virginia Key, wellness workshops, yoga, and beach activities.

ABOUT GRASSROOTS

The original Finger Lakes Grassroots Festival of Music & Dance began in 1990 as a benefit concert to support a local AIDS organization in Ithaca, NY.  Encouraged by the success of that night, a decision was made to create an annual festival dedicated to raising money for the fight against AIDS, while supporting arts and education.

With the help of countless volunteers, the Finger Lakes GrassRoots Festival has become an internationally-recognized event with a focus on traditional and contemporary roots music and dance from all over the world.  For four days every July, the festival hosts more than 60 performing groups on four stages at the Trumansburg Fairgrounds in Central New York near the university town of Ithaca.

Twelve years later, the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Music & Dance was launched on a 75-acre farm in rural North Carolina near the triangle cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Twice a year, in April and October, thousands of people attend the event to revel in great music, sweat it out on the dance floor, celebrate the arts, and build community.

The site has since become the Shakori Hills Community Arts Center, a non-profit organization created to strengthen the community through music, arts and education.

The festival winters at the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, just off the coast of Miami, FL. This year’s edition is the sixth incarnation of the Virginia Key Grassroots Festival of Music & Dance, featuring local and national acts.

Jim Camacho Releases “Please Come Home”

Jim Camacho Releases “Please Come Home” Single and Video July 28

New song, a lyrical and sonic gem, captures Camacho’s expertise at songwriting and recording

Miami, FL – July 28, 2015 – One of Miami’s premier singer/songwriters Jim Camacho has independently issued a new adult alternative single called “Please Come Home”. An acoustic guitar-driven Americana song co-written by Camacho, Jodi Marr and George Noriega , and co-produced with Fernando Perdomo, the new single reflects a slide towards country music. The production has a timeless feel reminiscent of the Eagles or Bruce Springsteen. The track is now available as a download on iTunes and can be streamed on Spotify.

The song was recorded and co-produced by frequent collaborator and L.A.-based musician / multi-instrumentalist Perdomo at his Reseda Ranch Studios and Capitol Studios during Camacho’s spring 2014 tour of the Northwest and West Coast. Camacho sings lead vocals and plays acoustic and bass guitar. Perdomo handles electric, slide and acoustic guitar and organ, in addition to handling production duties.  Jordan Welch is featured on drums and percussion, John Camacho contributes backing vocals and Sharief Hobley, who’s worked with John Legend and Rufus Wainwright, among others, contributes electric guitar parts. The track was mixed by Charles Dye and mastered by Ryan Smith.

The opening lyric “Some call it madness, some call it love,” sets the tone of this romantic song about forgiveness. “Maybe she’ll leave me, it’s what I deserve, or maybe she’ll keep me for better or worse”    – these lines demonstrate a simplicity embedded with barroom wisdom and a relatable story. Jim’s vocal delivery is convincing and impassioned. The slide guitar mimics the pedal steel guitars heard in country-flavored music; they serve to provide a soft bed for the other sounds to lie in and widen the song’s appeal.

The video, directed by Juan Davila and produced by Annie Fernandez, stars local chanteuse Samantha D’Giff and features cameo appearances by Fritz Dorigo (Crease), Ferny Coipel (Humbert) and Alex Ibanez (Price) as Jim’s band. Shot at the now-defunct venue The Stage Miami and at Copiel’s Shack North Annex studio, the video is brilliantly edited and deftly tells the story of the song. Coming off a well-received, sold-out debut at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center earlier this month, Camacho’s next move is to perform as part of the Mad Cat Theater Company’s production of RAM by Paul and Linda McCartney Friday, July 31 and Saturday August 1, 2015 at the Miami Theater Company. As a solo artist, he toured the west coast with folk legend Linda Perhacs and played a string of dates in the U.K. in 2014; Jim also laid down tracks at Capitol Records’ vaunted L.A. recording studio for a series of singles. In 2015, Camacho enjoyed a sell-out homecoming show at the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center.

Camacho has also become prolific at writing musicals and scoring children’s theater productions. His initial foray into the realm began with Fools’ Paradise, which was directed and choreographed by the acclaimed Jonathan Cerullo. The show ran as a full production in Miami and played to sold out workshops in New York. Next, he co-wrote and scored Guru, which premiered in  Miami, scored Mickey Herman Saves the $#&@ World, which premiered at the Adrienne Arsht Center, wrote the book and music for The Cavie Islanders and the Troll and The Guru of Gir.

He has collaborated with Sesame Street veteran Noel MacNeal on Who Put the Trick in Trick or Treat: Tales of Amazing Tricksters, Beasts of the Magical World, and The Carnival of Extraordinary Animals – all of which enjoyed runs during the “Boo at the Zoo” at the Bronx Zoo 2012-2014. Another collaboration with MacNeal, Mouse King, has become a new South Florida holiday tradition and will run for a third consecutive year this December. This year, Camacho premiered Digging for Bones, a musical about a group of time-travelling paleontologists and a friendly T-Rex dinosaur skeleton.

Majica & Mano Celebrate 10 Years on WDNA

The Baboons Celebrate 10 Years of “Global Gumbo” at WDNA Jazz Gallery June 6

Miami Latin funk band mark 10th anniversary of world music DJs Majica & Mano P. at WDNA on Sat., June 6th, 2015 at 7:30 p.m.

Miami’s 88.9FM WDNA will celebrate the 10th on-air anniversary of the station’s musically adventurous on-air personalities, Majica & Mano P., well-known to South Florida audiences as hosts of the station’s weekly world music radio program Global Gumbo with Majica & Mano P. and as founding members of veteran Latin funk band The Baboons. The station will commemorate the tag-team twosomes’ ten-year musical milestone with a concert by The Baboons on June 6th, 2015 at the WDNA Jazz Gallery, 2921 Coral Way, Miami. The DJ duo debuted as hosts of The Latin Jazz Quarter in 2005 and launched their world music show Global Gumbo in January 2012.

“We are thrilled that WDNA is providing us with the opportunity to perform our own music and offer some insight into the many international styles that inspire us as DJs, songwriters and musicians,” said lead vocalist Majica, who co-hosts Global Gumbo with Majica & Mano P with her husband and bandmate onSundays, 4-6pm. “The music that we play on the radio show and that we compose and perform with the band definitely feed each other.”

The Baboons will be showcasing songs from their upcoming recording, Spanglish, a musical portrait of modern Miami currently in production at Miami’s Red Door Studio. The opus-in-progress includes 15 all-original songs that blend an array of international influences into a danceable fusion that can only come from Miami. The recording features Majica on vocals and Mano P. on drums, with conguero Miguel Rega, guitarist Isaac Rodriguez, saxophonist Dominick Cama and bassist Michael Mut.

Colombian-born Miami artist Eva Ruiz, who will be exhibiting her artwork in the WDNA Jazz Gallery, will unveil an exuberant original painting commissioned by The Baboons as the CD cover for Spanglish.

The Baboons have been mashing up musical genres in South Florida’s live music scene for 22 years. Known for their danceable blend of Latin funk, world music, jazz and rock & roll, The Baboons have been featured on the Fusion network’s Fusion Live and on PBS’ Music Voyager. The collective has received many honors, including a Florida Jammy Award for Best Worldbeat Band in 1994. In 2000, the band’s debut release Evolution was honored as New Times Miami’s “Best Album of the Past Twelve Months” and in 2001, the band released the follow-up recording Global Gumbo.

Electric Piquete Live at Ball & Chain Miami May 8

Formed in and by the gritty Miami suburb of Hialeah, Electric Piquete is driven by an explosive three-piece horn section featuring Rich Dixon on trumpet and flugelhorn, Guillermo Roig on tenor sax and Jose Miranda on trombone, a powerfully tight rhythm section including the Latin Grammy-winning pianist Pepe Montes, Ed Rosado (drums), Michael Mut (bass) and Chris Correoso (guitar) and percussionist Raymond Ayala.
