Electric Piquete Celebrate the Release of New Double A Side of Music at Ball & Chain October 20

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Still Reeling” / “Fonquiviri” are first new studio recordings issued since 2016, a collaboration with the Music Preservation Project, and a benefit for the Lotus House

Hialeah, FL – October 1, 2019 – Latin funk band Electric Piquete tried and failed to run a successful crowd-funding campaign in 2018. Undaunted in its mission to record and release new music, the band has now partnered with the Music Preservation Project, the brainchild of Hialeah musician and producer Omar Garcia (Browner Sound / The Brand). The resulting works, a digital double A side of new music is now available and will be feted on October 20, 2019 at Ball & Chain during the venue’s monthly Pineapple Sunday event.

The bruising mid-tempo groove of “Still Reeling” and the blistering funk of “Fonquiviri” is now available exclusively through ElectricPiquete.Bandcamp.com on a pay-what-you-like basis. Proceeds from the sale of the music will benefit the Lotus House, an Overtown-based 501(c)3 organization dedicated to improving the lives of homeless women, youth and children. They provide sanctuary, support, education, tools and resources that empower them to heal, learn, grow and blossom. Learn more about them at www.lotushouse.org.

The Music Preservation Project was developed by the team at Browner Sound to capture, through professionally recorded audio, a snapshot of the musical culture in Miami at this moment in time. Selected artists, including local musicians, students in Title I public schools and street performers, are provided the service at no financial cost. The Music Preservation Project instead trades recording hours for community service hours from the musicians.

“The idea to trade recording hours for community service grew from a desire to support the bond between the City of Miami and its artists,” says Garcia. “Electric Piquete was invited to record as part of the Music Preservation Project and they subsequently will contribute not only the proceeds from this release, but 12 hours to a community service program of their choice.” For more information about the Music Preservation Project or Browner Sound, visit www.brownersound.com.

“When Omar presented the opportunity to record with him at Browner Sound, I could not say no,” says Michael Mut, co-founder, bassist and band leader. “I’ve long admired his musicianship and production skills, and have wanted to collaborate with him for ages. I’m extremely proud of the new music, all of the efforts put forth by the band, and very grateful to be able to help out the folks at the Lotus House. I invite everyone to check out what they do and contribute any way they can.”

Ball & Chain is located at 1513 SW 8 Street, Miami, FL 33134, and all ages are welcome to the free event. Also scheduled to perform are Rick Moon, the Goodnites, and the Scone Cash Players. Music begins at 2 p.m.

“Clamstavaganza” at Bar Nancy Celebrates 25 Years of Birdman’s Clambake

FOR IMMEDATE RELEASE

Past members of band best known for track “Oye Mamacita” will join current lineup for career-spanning jam on October 12 beginning at 10 p.m.

Miami, FL – September 26, 2019 – South Carolina native Sean “Birdman” Gould has been a Miami music-maker, guitarist / bassist for hire, sound engineer, and bandleader for the better part of three decades now. His band Birdman’s Clambake, which has evolved through several lineup changes, has remained a South Florida mainstay for nearly as long. On Saturday, October 12, 2019, the group will celebrate its silver anniversary at Bar Nancy in Little Havana, beginning at 10 p.m. The rock and blues trio will be joined by some very special guests. The Nancy is located at 2007 SW 8th St, Miami, Florida 33135. There is no cover to attend; 21 and over are welcome.

“Most people have wives and or kids and celebrate their 25th anniversary,” says Gould, who is also Bar Nancy’s lead sound engineer. “I don’t have either of those; all I have is my music and my band. It has been a fun ride to provide a live music soundtrack for so many people and musicians in Miami.” Sean plays bass in the Nil Lara trio and is an in-demand reggae session guitarist. He also records music at his Mango Tree home studio in North Miami.

For the uninitiated, Clambake features virtuoso guitar playing backed by a powerful rhythm section. They serve up a mix of blues with classic rock and a side of kitsch. The band’s repertoire varies from show to show, includes a fair amount of improvisations, and ranges from 50s staples to classics from the 60s and 70s. They also feature a good number of originals, including the 2000 ode to the ladies of Hialeah “Oye Mamacita”, and “Beer, Biscuits and Gravy“, for which a video was filmed at the now-closed Tobacco Road’s upstairs cabaret.

Monchy Coruguedo, the band’s steady drummer for the last 12+ years, offers: “The band that truly is the ‘Clan of The Clam’ is truly the best party band. It’s also a band that takes the music seriously, but not itself. We always welcome fans to share an experience, not just to watch a gig, all under the captaincy of our fearless and non-feathered Bird.” The band also features Michael Mut on bass.

The vibe of the Nancy is colonial-era nautical, its insides mimicking the galley of the famous ship. A daily happy hour offers half-priced drinks 4 to 7 p.m. The bar offers a sizable selection of draft and canned beers, as well as specialty cocktails and classic bar eats.

Clambake serves as the house band for a monthly “Jam with the Clam” open-mic style night hosted by Gould. Mondays are game and trivia nights; each month the bar resurrects the popular South Beach and Grove haunt The Kitchen Club. An outside patio with seating is available.

The Nancy is also home to the monthly marketplace / music event called Arroz Con Mango, and a recurring songwriter’s night series hosted by Juan Turros.

Hialeah Fest Returns to Churchill’s Pub on September 7

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Music festival to again showcase area talent and raise funds for Manos Internacional, a Miami-based global non-profit that funds educational programs

Little Haiti, FL – August 13, 2019 – The City of Progress’ beloved music festival is back after a lengthy absence. Spurned by Chuchill’s Pub mainstay Rat Bastard and timed to coincide with the local music Mecca’s 40th anniversary celebration, event founders and organizers / Hialeah natives Ferny Coipel and Tony Landa (Humbert) decided the time was right to bring Hialeah Fest back. Set to take place on Saturday, September 7, 2019, from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., the event will feature more than 20 bands on three stages, which will again be known as the Jupiña, Materva and Malta Hatuey stages. Cover is $7 and proceeds will go towards the 501(c)3 Manos Internacional, founded by another Hialeah boy made good, John Alvarez.

“Until we pressed pause, Hialeah Fest was the longest-running South Florida music festival,” says Coipel.  “Over the years we had so many people asking time after time ‘When is the fest coming back?’, ‘Is Hialeah Fest happening this year?’, ‘Is it happening this year?’, and it was just on indefinite hiatus. I am glad that we are able to put this back together for the kids of Manos, and the arts community.” Coipel plays keyboards / guitar and is a founding member of Humbert, which is one of the festival’s main acts and has been for years, and I Don’t Know, which anchored the event prior to Humbert forming in 1999.

“We’re only doing this because Rat made us do it,” offers Landa. “He just kept harassing us until we finally agreed to do it. Hialeah Fest existed all those years in part because of Dave Daniels and Churchill’s, and now it will exist at least one more time because of Rat.” Landa plays bass and is also a founding member of Humbert; he is also the bassist for I Don’t Know. In addition, he runs the outstanding local music blog Dig Under Rock, which is dedicated to promoting and documenting local and national music in South Florida, and is Hialeah Fest’s official media sponsor.

Featured acts include: Afrobeta, Beyond the Boundary, The Brand, Brute, Electric Piquete, Electric Supply Company, H -OM, Humbert, Medina, Nekromaniak, the Nag Champayons Present: Psychedelic Jazz Practice, Stereo JouleDama Vicke, and more to be announced.

Hialeah Fest was founded in 1994, and was an annual occurrence until 2013, when Landa bowed out due to a family health issue. Coipel did not think it was appropriate to carry it on without him. However, this year is a different story. “The climate is right,” he says. “Things have aligned.”
Manos helps educate children around the world, including Mexico and China; learn more at manosintl.org.

There is a special surprise tribute in the works. Churchills is located at 5501 NE 2nd Ave, Miami, FL 33137. For more information, visit the Facebook event page or call the venue at 305.757.1807.

Dancehall Legend King Yellowman’s Tour Winds through Guanabanas July 10

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jamaica’s biggest star not surnamed Marley plays the Jupiter waterfront venue with special guest Reggae Force, presented by the Mashup Reggae brand

Jupiter, FL – June 21, 2019 – Roots Music, Inc. and Mashup Reggae present Jamaica’s very first dancehall superstar King Yellowman live at Guanabanas Island Restaurant & Bar during their weekly BIG WEDNESDAYS night, July 10, 2010. Special guest Reggae Force from Fort Lauderdale will kick off the night at 8 p.m. Show is free, open to those 21 and over. Guanabanas, the award-winning and popular waterfront venue, is located at 960 N Hwy A1A, Jupiter, FL 33477.

“Yellowman is credited for assuming the mantle of reggae music when Bob Marley passed away and with taking it to another level,” says Talent Buyer Matt Cahur. “We are excited and honored about hosting a figure of his stature at Guanabanas.” Cahur founded Roots Music, Inc. more than 20 years ago and now manages rock and reggae acts, and produces and promotes local and regional concerts. He is also the venue’s lead sound engineer and hospitality master, and is an accomplished songwriter and guitarist to boot.

Born Winston Foster in Negril, Jamaica in 1950, Yellowman overcame the twin hardships of being born an albino and raised at the Maxfield Orphanage in Kingston to lead a prolific recording and touring career as Jamaica’s boastful and cheeky dancehall king. His first major break came in 1979 when he won the Tastee Patties Talent Contest. He began issuing major label and independent releases in the early 80s, spanning into the new millennium. He is best known for the hits “Me Kill Barnie”, “Operation Eradication”, and “Shorties”.

His latter era career has seen him collaborate the producer Philip Burrell, AKA Fatis and release music through the Ras label. Yellowman’s message has become more socially conscious, with tracks like “Stop Beat Woman”, which condemned domestic violence, and “Free Africa”, which spoke out against apartheid.  Although his trademark rapid-fire delivery has slowed a bit, he remains a lyrical force and a dynamic live performer.

Reggae Force is made of up some of South Florida’s best reggae musicians, including one with Wailers pedigree: Junior Jazz on vocals and guitar, Aston Barrett, Jr. (son of bass player “Family Man”) on drums, Alaina Reed on bass, and Peter Pan “Sprangy” Williamson on keys.  They also serve as backing band for Wayne Stoddart & Mystic Soul, and are getting set to release new album featuring their latest single “Ready for the Show!”

Mashup Reggae is a lifestyle media, entertainment and independent apparel brand with a strong focus on the roots of American and international reggae music. Listen live online at www.MashupReggae.com.

This fall, the group will once again team up with co-founder Julio Cesar Rodriguez Delet for the debut of their second EP release titled Canciones de Julio, which features five original compositions written by Julio Cesar, including the classic “Casa de la Trova”, penned by his father Julio Rodriguez. The band is currently enjoying a weekly Thursday night residency at La Centrale Italian Food Hall in the Brickell City Center.

The décor at Bar Nancy is colonial-era nautical, and once inside, one gets the sense of being below deck and in the galley of a ship. Wood-lined walls, and wooden tables and chairs lend a natural essence to the place. Nancy’s sizable selection of draft and canned beers, as well as specialty cocktails set it apart from other Little Havana watering holes. The bar also showcases a monthly “songwriters in the round” night hosted by Juan Turros, as well as a daily happy hour 4 to 7 p.m.

ABOUT CORTADITO

Cortadito’s focus is on performing the traditional Cuban music of the early 20th century. From Son MontunoGuarachaBolerosNengon, and Bolero Son, this dynamic ensemble brings the listener back to a time when Trio Matamoros, or Ignacio Piniero ruled the Cuban music world. The era when popular music was Cuban Music and Son Montuno was influencing music throughout the globe. From time to time, Cortadito is backed by a variety of guest musicians, which gives the group a sound reminiscent of the Buena Vista Social Club.

Jose Elias founded the band alongside Julio Cesar Rodriguez Delet from Santiago de Cuba in November of 2011 after a 12-year stint with Conjunto Progreso that garnered him a Grammy nomination for his participation in the album Masters of Cuban Son. The duo was an instant success and were invited to perform at the Fingerlakes Grassroots festival in Trumansberg, NY. They released their first CD titled Abriendo Caminos in 2012, which featured one original composition by each of the artists “Delicias Caribeña” (Elias) and “Te Lo Perdiste” (Delet).

In 2013, Julio Cesar moved to Houston, Texas and was replaced by Humberto Upierre from Guanabacoa, Cuba. The group then expanded into a trio which included percussionist Andres Polanco Rivas from Holguin, Cuba. In 2015, the group reunited with Julio Cesar to record what would be the songs for their next release, which included the participation of double bass player YorgisGoiricelaya (AlbitaOscar De Leon) from Matanzas, Cuba.

From 2015 to 2017 the group added various musicians to the roster, including the likes Eduardo Saborit on vocals and rhythm guitar from Santiago de Cuba, percussionist Santiago McCookWilfredo Fuentes Cespedes who recorded and toured with Eliades Ochoa, and Horacio Rodriguez, who worked with Orquesta Aragon from 2000 to 2016. Most recently, the group has added double bass player Alberto Pantaleon, who has toured with the Buena Vista Social Club and Eliades Ochoa.
